How successful would an Imran Khan have been sans the ‘Aamir’s nephew’ tag? It’s hard to say. There were different speculations about Jaane Tu... Some said the film scored well because Aamir was the producer. But marketing can only get you an opening weekend. In the case of Jaane Tu..., people wanted more prints with time and even the collections increased. That showed that the film was drawing repeat audience.
With time being a constraint, how do you handle your love life? We are not the only working couple in the country. In my case, I spend my free time with her. Avantika is travelling with me. In fact, she is with me in Kolkata.
You’re generating all the buzz now... I’m a fresher in the industry. Minissha, on the other hand, has done more films than I have. People are used to her. I am one-film-old and maybe, the audience is plain curious about me.
Why did you choose to essay a negative shade in your second screen outing? It was a challenge to stretch one’s limits.
About this film, Sanjay Dutt had said in an interview, ‘I could relate to the father in the film. I love my daughter Trishala immensely and during the making of this film I kept thinking about what I would do or how I would react if Trishala ever got kidnapped’. Did you understand that while shooting with him? Baba did tell me about it. Without trying to speculate about his method of acting, I can say that the key moments are downright honest and real.
How do you think your dad would have reacted in a similar situation? I guess, his reaction wouldn’t be any different from Baba’s in case I am kidnapped.
But one hears that a jadoo ki jhappi from Sanjay Dutt took away your tensions... Though it took away my personal tension, I was still tense professionally. He was always very protective. But on a professional level, he is still the senior actor who deserves respect.
Were you still nervous while shooting with him? I can’t deny that there is the pressure to be the best. I needed to ensure that there were no retakes. His time is precious and I couldn’t have wasted it.
Dutt had also spoken about you when he had said, ‘I hope and pray that success doesn’t change him.’ How difficult is it to for you to remain grounded? I haven’t found it difficult as I’m not into that world (read product launches, parties, etc). That is not my life, or my world. The other things are just fluff and I am busy with my films — either rehearsing for them or promoting my ventures.
Do you feel insecure about not having any films post Delhi Belly? Jaane Tu... released three months back. My latest is about to hit theatres. I am almost through with Luck and busy with the pre-production of Delhi Belly. I’ve more work than I can handle.
When acting is a profession, how important is money to you? It is certainly important but it can’t be the deciding factor. I am being flooded with three film to five film deals. But, I’m not comfortable about taking up those offers. Take Delhi Belly for example, it’s an offbeat film and I am not charging anything for it.

When do you plan to go behind the camera? I don’t have time for it in the next three years. But writing and directing a film are certainly on the anvil.
