In the second part we now try and find out how the rising star deals with pressures of stardom and being a Khan. As his new film Luck opens across cinemas we get to know more about Imran Khan, the person.
You mentioned Neil Nitin Mukesh and Ranbir Kapoor. The three of you represent kind of a new order in Bollywood. What do you think separates this generation from say Aamir Khan's?I think with every generation of actors a few things change. Our personal tastes are obviously different from our predecessors' and that then translates into the kind of work we do. The language of cinema is always evolving. Just look at the last five years. Can you imagine Rock On and Jaane Tu being made a decade ago?
But this crop of actors seems far more secure and doesn't indulge in the intense rivalry we are used to seeing… where's the fierce competitiveness?Do the maths. How many films can I do in a year? Maximum four! There are about 80-100 A-graders that get a proper release. So the work is distributed well between all of us. You know there is shortage of actors in the industry and that's why prices are so high. Everybody and their cousin is turning into a producer. Even my make up man says he has tied up with Warner Brothers. But there aren't enough saleable faces. Since there is no shortage of A-list producers we are all secure. Ranbir, Neil and I are booked for next two years and still the offers don't stop.
Shruti has sung a song in Luck. Don't you have any plans of singing in the futureHave you heard her sing? She's deadly in that song. I am nowhere close to her.
Now one keeps reading stories about your temperament and interfering nature. I am referring to what's happening with Seven Days In Paris…This issue has just been blowing out of preparation. Gadhvi (Sanjay) and I have a personal equation. He just came up to Katrina Kaif and me with an interesting idea. But suddenly everyone went around the town talking about it as a film. So all sorts of rumours about its cast and plot were fabricated. But in reality everything is still very premature.
But do you otherwise have an eye for detail or people just like to draw parallels between Aamir Khan and you? It's a bit of both. See, anyone who has worked with Aamir will say all that's reported is not true. It's just become an accepted story since it's been repeated so many times. So it becomes even easier to drop the same story on me as well. But having said that, I do get very involved in my work. If I am investing my time into something (and I do put in a lot of time), I don't take things lightly. I go all out to promote my film. I guess Hrithik Roshan and Aamir Khan are the only other actors who do so much. I believe I want to put in my best and make sure it works. Take for instance Luck. Who else have you interviewed? But it doesn’t mean I am going to sit with the director and re-edit. In Luck I had a 12-minute-long back-story. I asked Soham to chop it down to four. So that may be perceived as interfering, but it's not for my benefit.
Is there a constant obligation to talk about Aamir Khan and always praise him? Once you said you like Shah Rukh Khan and it became this huge TV story about the Khan war. How do you react to such reports?I don't. What's there to react. Shah Rukh Khan is a very successful actor because a large number of people like him. Obviously I can't say that he is a bad actor just because I am related to Aamir Khan.
Today you are also a star. During your daily life what is it that keeps reminding you of the change? When people turn around and give me a second look.
Do you enjoy the attention?I enjoy interacting with fans. It's nice to meet them face-to-face. I feel if you are rude to a fan you have lost him forever. If you talk to them or click a picture, they will become even bigger fans.
You have been in a stable relationship for quite sometime. What's Imran Khan's secret to remaining completely gossip free? The fact is that I am just not into random socialising. I don't go out so often. So if I am not even spotted anywhere, there's no scope for media gossip.
