Karan Johar has denied reports that his next film, tentatively titled Short Term Shaadi starring Kareena Kapoor and Imran Khan, is an adaptation of the Hollywood movie What Happens In Vegas.
“It is an original story by the writer-director of the film Shakun Batra,” asserts Johar. The 38-year-old filmmaker also dismisses rumours that Kareena has been asked to return to her size zero for the movie or cut her hair short.
“I have not spoken to Kareena about any of this. She will look the way she does — beautiful,” says Johar. His latest film, We Are Family, directed by Siddharth Malhotra, is an official adaptation of the Hollywood film Stepmom. It has received mixed response at the box office.
Karan Johar“I don’t think We Are Family is a rip-off. People don’t even remember the original; it is a true adaptation. There are tracks and scenes in my movie that weren’t there in Stepmom,” he argues. “We haven’t copied anything. We paid for the rights to the film, which means we own the content and can replicate it our way.”
Johar says that the team is happy to have given it an Indian touch to the Hollywood film. Talking on Hollywood adaptations in Bollywood Johar adds, “An adaptation is a director’s prerogative. But there should be no order or norm to it. It should happen naturally and organically.”
"As actors, we all want our audience to like our work; so even if you ask me this question after five years I will say yes I want to work harder and harder to be loved by my audience."
